2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Since its debut in 1989, the Mazda MX-5 Miata was designed with fun in mind. As a peppy, open air roadster, it was meant to revive the feel of the small and agile European two seater cars of the 1960s. In the Miata’s 30 year history, it has continued that legacy. Now in its 30th year of production, the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata is as playful, sporty and nimble as ever.

Styling

Mazda has provided two styles for 2019, the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF. The main difference is the choice of tops. The Mazda MX-5 Miata provides a traditional soft top that folds down manually for a full convertible look.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata RF provides a power operated hardtop convertible. With a push of a button, the trunk is raised and the top slides into the trunk. The back window remains raised, the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF gives a targa look. The convertible top of the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF blends perfectly with the lines of the car, giving it the look and feel of a stylish coupe.

PERFORMANCE

Mazda provides a 2.0L inline 4 cylinder Skyactiv engine with the Mazda MX-5 Miata. For 2019, the engine gives a 15 percent increase in horsepower over the 2018 model. It comes standard with a six speed manual transmission, or its optional six speed automatic. Either package is more than enough to provide excellent acceleration and responsiveness, with its 0-60 time under 6 seconds and less than 15 seconds for the quarter mile.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata RF provides the same Skyactiv engine, producing the same horsepower and torque. The convertible hardtop does add approximately 120 lbs to the Mazda MX-5 Miata, so the same engine is pulling a little more weight. On the other hand, with the top up, the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is a little more aerodynamic. In terms of performance, the difference is negligible.

Interior

The Mazda MX-5 MX-5 Miata is designed as a two seat roadster, but for the driver and passenger, leg room leg and headroom is substantial. A telescoping steering wheel is new for 2019 for taller drivers. Riders will fit snugly in its leather seats or be wrapped in ergonomic comfort with the optional Recaro sport racing seats.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata RF offers the same interior packages as the Mazda MX-5 Miata. With the hardtop convertible folding into the trunk, cargo room is a little more limited. As with the Mazda MX-5 Miata soft top, the RF offers a full package of infotainment, from a 7 inch color touch screen, multiple USB ports, Bluetooth capability, Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata Safety

Safety

Mazda has outfitted both the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF with many of the safety features used in modern driving, along with a few unique and innovative features. Both models have a lane warning system, blindspot monitoring and a rear lane cross monitor. Mazda provides a traffic sign recognition feature on its Active Driving Display for times when the driver may have missed a traffic sign. Rear backup cameras are new for 2019.

Like the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF provides G-vector handling, where the car optimizes load and electronically adjusts steering depending on weight and conditions. The 2019 models provide a low speed emergency braking system and Bremble system for enhancing braking.
